For Moderators

Moderation tools, user management, and hub settings for stewards.

Moderator overview

Moderators in PubHubs are called stewards. Stewards are room-level moderators appointed by hub administrators to help maintain a safe and respectful environment.

What stewards can do

  • Send announcements: broadcast important messages to all room members
  • Send whisper messages: privately message a specific user within a room, visible only to them
  • Issue yellow cards (kick): temporarily remove a user from a room
  • Issue red cards (ban): permanently ban a user from a room
  • Revoke bans: allow previously banned users back into a room

Contacting stewards

Regular members can open a steward contact room from within any room to reach the stewards of that room. This allows members to report issues, ask questions, or request help from moderators.

As a steward, you will receive these contact requests and can respond to members directly.

Note

Moderation features are still evolving. Some tools and workflows may change as PubHubs develops.

Moderation tools

Stewards have access to several tools for managing conversations and user behavior in their rooms.

Announcements

Stewards can send announcement messages that are visually highlighted in the room. Announcements stand out with a colored border and an “ANNOUNCEMENT” label, making them easy to spot among regular messages.

To send an announcement, use the announcement option in the message actions menu.

Whisper messages

A whisper is a private message sent within a room that is only visible to the recipient. Other room members cannot see it. This is useful for giving a quiet warning, asking someone to adjust their behavior, or providing private feedback.

To send a whisper, click on a user’s name or avatar in the room and select Whisper.

Yellow card (kick)

A yellow card temporarily removes a user from a room. The user can rejoin the room afterward.

  1. Click on the user’s name in the members list or on one of their messages.
  2. Select Yellow card.
  3. Enter a reason for the removal. This reason is recorded.
  4. Confirm. The user is removed from the room.

Red card (ban)

A red card permanently bans a user from a room. They cannot rejoin unless the ban is revoked.

The process is the same as a yellow card, but select Red card instead. You must provide a reason.

Revoking a ban

To allow a previously banned user back into a room, find them in the members list (they appear under sanctioned members) and select Revoke red card.

Note

Moderation features are still evolving. Some tools may change as PubHubs develops.

Roles & permissions

PubHubs uses a role-based system to manage what users can do within a hub.

Role hierarchy

From most to least permissions:

  1. Admin: full control over the hub: rooms, users, settings
  2. Super Steward: senior moderator with elevated permissions
  3. Steward: room moderator with moderation tools
  4. Expert: recognized member with limited extra permissions
  5. User: regular hub member

Each role includes all the capabilities of the roles below it.

Becoming a steward

Stewards are appointed by hub administrators. The process involves Yivi verification:

  1. An admin or existing steward initiates a steward invitation for you.
  2. You receive a disclosure request asking you to verify your identity through Yivi.
  3. Once your attributes are verified, you are promoted to steward for the relevant room(s).

Tip

Yivi verification for stewards ensures that moderators are accountable. The organization knows who its moderators are, even though regular members only see pseudonyms.

Note

Roles and permissions are still evolving. Some capabilities may change as PubHubs develops.
